On Sunday, Monaco secured their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages after defeating Lyon 2-1 at Stade Louis II. The win was all the more impressive given that it came against a Lyon side that had won eight consecutive league games going into the match.
The game got off to a slow start, with both teams struggling to create any clear-cut chances. However, Monaco eventually broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Benjamin Mendy found space on the left wing and crossed for French striker Kylian Mbappe to head home from close range.
Lyon responded immediately, however, as they were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute following a handball by Monaco defender Florian Thauvin. Brazilian forward Edinson Cavani stepped up to take the spot-kick but his effort was saved by Monaco goalkeeper Romain Dostrovsky.
In stoppage time, Monaco midfielder Nabil Fekir was sent off for a second bookable offence and Lyon took advantage of the numerical disadvantage, with Moussa Sissoko scoring the equaliser just four minutes later.
However, Monaco were able to hold on for the victory thanks to a stunning goal from Ben Yedder in the 94th minute. The French striker received a pass from Thauvin down the right flank and fired a low shot past Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to give Monaco the three points they needed to secure their spot in the next round.
Overall, it was a dominant display from Monaco, who showed why they are one of the best teams in Europe this season. They now have 18 personal goals for the season, which is a new club record and a testament to the form of players like Mbappe, Fekir and Yedder. With a strong run in the Champions League and a strong domestic campaign, Monaco look set to finish the season strongly and potentially push for a top-four finish in France.
